Stress is a part of life and we all experience it in one way or another. One thing that you should know about stress: it can make your addiction stronger. That's why it's important to find ways to manage your stress so you can maintain sobriety when outside of your drug rehab center. When we are under pressure, our body produces adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones can make it more difficult to maintain abstinence from alcohol or drugs as they trigger cravings for substances again. Sobriety is a difficult and long journey. It's important to stay mindful of the stress you're under and take care of yourself in order to maintain your sobriety. Here are some helpful tips on how to manage your stress levels!
Talk It Out
No matter how big or small, you should always be open about your struggles or any stressors you’re facing. Problems kept to yourself will only progress and grow until you can no longer keep them in check. If you’re currently undergoing therapy at a rehab treatment facility, you’ll more than likely have a counselor or fellow addicts in recovery you can vent your struggles to. A fresh perspective could also help you figure out solutions to your issues and as someone in your shoes, they can relate to you and let you know that you’re not alone. If you’ve completed your stay at your alcohol and drug rehab center, you could talk to your family, friends, and others who have recently finished their program.
Stay Positive
We know it’s easy to say, but keeping a positive mindset is crucial to your sobriety, especially when the stress hits. It’s impossible to stay stressed as long as you keep a bright outlook on life and feel grateful and content with your life. Take some deep breaths, focus your energy, and try to relax. One good way of bringing positivity back into your mind is to think about something or someone that brings you joy.
Control Only What You Can
Some things are out of your control. To help you lessen the amount of stress you’re dealing with, try to remember this. To avoid creating extra stress in your life, let go of the things you have no say in, and only worry about what it is you can control. Don’t cling onto the past - instead, try to move forward and let go. The main thing you can control is your behavior, so make that a priority, and try not to stress over the rest!
Remember Your Progress
When stress hits and times are tough, remember all the progress you’ve made and how far you’ve come. Whether you’re still in your program at your drug rehab center or you’re trying to carry on back at home, you’ve still come so far since your last drink or hit. We don’t know what lies ahead of us, but we do know our past, so remember all that you’ve been through and be proud of what you’ve achieved. If you’re feeling down or stressed, looking back at your progress can help to really put things into perspective, and what you were worrying about might seem like no big deal afterward!
