Recognizing your addiction is the first step to recovery. For many, this can be a difficult thing to do. The denial of addiction is part of what keeps these individuals going back for more substance abuse time after time. They don't see themselves as someone with a problem or someone who needs help, instead choosing to blame others for their problems. We’re here to tell you that it is possible to get help, and you can get through your problems, but you can’t avoid that first crucial step - recognizing your addiction.
What is an addiction?
The dictionary defines addiction as a physical or psychological dependence on something. The person feels like they need to do the activity in order to survive because it's so enjoyable for them at that point, even if it harmful to themselves or others. It can be hard for people who have never had an addiction before to understand how deeply addicted someone can become until they've experienced one themselves - many addicts can suffer from withdrawal symptoms when abstaining from their addictive behavior which can be extremely challenging.
Recognizing addiction - What signs to look for
For most people addiction can be a hard thing to recognize, but the more you know about your own personal signs of it then the easier it will become and the sooner you can enroll at a drug rehab & alcohol treatment center to tackle your demons.
There are many signs you can look out for if you think you or someone you love may have an addiction. A lack of control and an inability to stop the activity is the easiest sign to spot. It starts off innocently enough - a drink here or drug there every now and then; maybe just one smoke after work with coworkers on Friday night- but before long these things become routine: day drinking at home alone until noon, using cocaine twice a week behind closed doors; ordering another shot of whiskey as soon as you hit happy hour so no one notices how many beers have gone missing already.
Does this sound all too familiar? If so, then you should consider checking into a drug rehab & alcohol treatment center, like our Christian-based rehab treatment facility here at Rob’s Ranch.
How and when to get help
Once you’ve recognized your unhealthy habit, the next step is to seek help. Kicking an addiction is a hard task, and you should never have to do it alone. As soon as you’ve recognized your addiction, reach out to a rehab treatment facility that focuses on your specific issue - there are many facilities out there to choose from, so make sure you do your research and pick one that resonates with your beliefs.
